It is basically Anthem as it happened every night, on the way to vinyl. Performance was their primary form of expression and sharing. It is easy to agree. This show is a delightful example of that salesmanship held in close quarters: a college cafeteria. Check it out.
It could be your next favorite Dead gig. The Dead did not play that song during this legendary near-four-hour appearance. McKernan, in particular, was in defiantly strong and comic vocal form. It was one of his last performances. The singer-organist, suffering from liver disease, played his final show with the Dead a month later in Los Angeles, and died in March He was Civic Center, Philadelphia August 5th, The dead played two concerts in this cavernous arena on August 4th and 5th.
I worked at both of them, as part of the security team. Choosing one of these two dates is tough. Great American Music Hall, San Francisco August 13th, Exhausted by the logistical and financial strains of touring with the Wall of Sound, the Dead stayed away from the road in — playing only four shows that year, all of them at home. Their pride in the new music and the healthy effect of their break from the grind are evident in the relaxed, textured swing of this performance. The Dead never played that one live, in full, again.
The Beacon was the third stop on the tour. Another golden era was under way. Highlights are plentiful: Five concerts from one week in late May have come out on archival releases, and the May 8th show at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, is often cited in greatest-ever terms.
But I keep coming back to this valedictory blast on home ground — the end of a three-night stand and the final gig of the tour — because of the second set. There was new blood: keyboard player Brent Mydland. But that success brought an explosion in numbers on the road, overwhelming the parking-lot scene and the dedicated pilgrims following the band from town to town. Through it all, the Dead toured as if their survival depended on it — which it always did — and played fondly remembered gigs, often off the beaten track.

The newly christened Grateful Dead found an unusual and appropriate patron in psychedelic chemist and sound engineer Augustus Owsley Stanley III , known as Bear, whose profits sustained them as they began to write their own songs and hone their conversational playing style in Signing to Warner Brothers in late , they released their self-titled debut later that spring, consisting mostly of cover songs, with only one extended jam.
Having already a set a course of constant musical change, it was in the next years that the Grateful Dead would begin to blossom both onstage and in the studio. Shortly thereafter, the band added Mickey Hart drums, percussion , who helped the Dead realize their psychedelic musical vision with new rhythmic intensity and commitment to practice. Over the course of , with the band performing acoustic sets, members of the New Riders of the Purple Sage would often wander on and off to add instruments and voices.
In early , Mickey Hart took an indefinite leave of absence for personal reasons. Within weeks, after blowing away the band in practice jams, Keith Godchaux piano, keyboards became a member of the Grateful Dead, adding acoustic piano to their stage sound.
From an unassuming block of houses in San Rafael, they built a small industry around themselves, including a publishing company, a travel agency, and for a time even a spin-off boutique. Playing custom instruments through custom amplification, the band earned a deserved reputation for attention to non-metaphoric sonic detail. Channeling all of their progressive instincts into music to go along with their progressive businesses, the Grateful Dead tilted away from Americana on Wake of the Flood and From the Mars Hotel , their first two releases on Grateful Dead Records.
Playing in ever-larger venues, the era also included the Watkins Glen Summer Jam, featuring the Dead, the Allman Brothers, The Band, and an estimated , concertgoers; for many years standing as the largest concert crowd in world history. Perhaps too oversized. By the end of , the Grateful Dead were overwhelmed and exhausted, announcing their imminent retirement from the road.
Working with Fleetwood Mac producer Keith Olsen, their first major outside collaborator since their debut 10 years earlier, the band created Terrapin Station A summer-ending show in Englishtown, New Jersey show before an estimated , minted a new generation of fans.
