As they followed a remote forest road, the platoon began to find dead and emaciated people. At the end of the road, Thayer and his men discovered and liberated the Gunskirchen Lager concentration camp, part of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp complex, saving approximately 15, Hungarian Jews.
Going Forward. Jews and President's Day. Making things happen! That is why we at Federation continue to develop new initiatives every year.
Keep doing what you believe is right. You must constantly evolve and take risks, while maintaining the essence of who you are. Our work is a marathon — not a sprint. Some songs become iconic hits while others just fade away. The same holds true for our Jewish institutions and community initiatives. Let's recognize not everything will be a hit and it is okay if some things fade away.
But they have performed for over 45 years and probably in front of over ,, fans. Jewish communities have also done something right. For their first concert tour, which kicked off in Edmonton, Kiss was originally scheduled to make their Toronto debut in April at the Victory Burlesque, the Spadina Avenue theatre initially built to show movies in Yiddish — except the show was cancelled.
This visit was also when Kiss met Toronto-based record producer Bob Ezrin, who already made his name on albums by Alice Cooper. The original four members reunited for MTV Unplugged in and, after a dozen years out of costume, went back on tour with painted faces.
But tensions with Criss and Frehley resurfaced. Frehley also ended up on the outs again, and Kiss employee Tommy Thayer filled his Spaceman boots, a part that he might have been born to play. Simmons boasts that his mother, Florence Klein, was among the 15, liberated from a concentration camp in northern Austria by a U.
And we brought the stuff to our loft and without anybody else there, just the four of us started putting makeup on our faces. We had no idea what we were doing. Almost fifty years later.
AS: What is it about pyrotechnics that you love? GS: I was always bored when I went to see the bands live. I got excited when Hendrix lit his guitar on fire. I got excited when Townsend smashed his guitars and when there was fog on stage, when The Who would destroy their amplifiers. Because it was performance art. So, we literally started drawing ideas without managers or anything and just decided what do. If I was a fan and went to see a band, what can we do to not just play songs—you know, the songs have to be good—but what else can we give them?
An audio-visual treat. So, if you go to see Sir Paul McCartney or wrestling or Garth Brooks and you see fireworks there, where do you think they got that from? Everybody writes a few good songs. AS : What did you enjoy or not enjoy about the fame that resulted from these creative choices? GS: Everything we do is much harder. We are the hardest working band in show business. It takes me two hours just to put the makeup on and probably a half hour or so to take it off.
I walk around in inch platform dragon boots and each of them weigh as much as a bowling ball. All told, the outfit and the bass and everything probably weights forty pounds. I spit fire. I fly through the air. It would be easier to be the Edge. Jagger is in amazing shape. He works his ass off. The physicality of what we do is more demanding than anybody since James Brown. AS: Why did you decide to partner with Gibson on the new signature instruments?
The Grabber, the Ripper. I want more access to the neck there. I designed and trademarked my own instruments. One was the Axe, which also qualifies as an invention. And the Punisher, which I did on my own without guitar companies or retail. I just sold them direct to the fans and 10, of those instruments have been sold. Do you want to join the Gibson family? In fact, I took the very first instrument of the new one and played it live for hundreds of millions of people in Dubai.
AS : How did it feel? GS: Really fantastic! It sounded fantastic, like a good kick in the nuts. You seem to always want to do more and investigate more and more pathways. What do you like about this? GS: Well, as far as I know, you only get one ride on this thing called life. So, be adventurous. Trains are fine. That was an experience! People should be extraordinary. Been there, done that! What do you find yourself thinking about most often these days?
GS: Crypto currency. Governments, as you know now print money whenever they need it. So, inflation keeps getting bigger and bigger. The dollar used to be based on gold and you can lose a dollar.
