It is unfortunately being overrun by people. Another joy of the Adirondacks is canoeing fcrom the lower peaks up to the upper peaks. I've done that 4 times in my teenage years and haven't been back since.
Its a great day canoe trip that starts at longs lake and continues way up north. I really have to get back there some day. I live in Colorado now and am tackling some of these peaks and epipc hikes. Great trail, very well marked. Make sure to sign in and out at the trailhead logbook! It took 7 hours total. Going up for 4 hours and coming down for 3 hours. No break except 30min in the summit. It's not difficult but definitely long. It's super cold at the top so you'd better be ready for it.
Muddy and rocky trails but it brought me a lot of fun. Highly recommend! Not too difficult. Zero visibility on the top of Marcy. Added on Phelps mountain on the way back which had new views. Most difficult day hike. Great weather. Though the ceiling was down for the top. Very sad. But I do not enjoy very wet rocky trails. All the wAy up and all the way down. I did it. Beautiful weather until the top…full cloud! Wear good hiking shoes very slippery on way down.
Tremendous sunny fall day with very comfortable temperatures at the top. We started at 7am from the parking lot, made the top by a little after 11am, had a bite to eat, and returned to the parking lot at about 4pm. We measured about Trial was well marked but fairly wet and rocky. The middle couple of miles both up and down were more challenging than expected because of these conditions.
The last mile was steep but better than expected because fairly dry and the weather was great. Very fun hike but takes some time and planning. I was definitely not mentally or physically prepared for climbing this mountain but I did it with my partner! The app says we took 10 hours but it was more like 12, we started at 7 am and finished after 7 pm.
We are pretty young but not in amazing physical shape so there were experienced older hikers passing us the whole way up and down. The views up on the summit were breathtaking and there was NO wind. Other hikers that have done Marcy before said it was unusual but amazing weather. The leaves were in peak color change as well. I fell coming down three times on the steep rock slabs that were entirely covered in water, so definitely wear good hiking shoes with lots of traction an absolute must to summit the mountain.
Would recommend to anyone daring enough to take this long journey! Give yourself enough time to get down before it gets dark, because it gets DARK. We finished the last 2 miles to the ADK Loj in the pitch black. My first high peak, 45 to go!
