The result was the first part of a two-volume work written to Theophilus. We know the subsequent volume as Acts. Much of the dating of the book of Luke depends on the dating of Acts. It stands to reason that the book of Luke was completed before Acts. But when? Luke likely used this time apart from Paul to begin gathering information for writing the gospel from primary sources—those people who had witnessed the ministry, death, and resurrection appearances of Jesus.
If Luke took to writing his gospel soon after the information was gathered, then it would have been completed around AD 60, after Paul had been transferred to a Roman prison. If Acts w ere written while Paul was alive, then the Gospel must have been, too.
And that, in turn, gives us a clue that the other Gospels were written very early on. Although there is absolutely no agreement among NT scholars on the order in which Matthew, Mark, and Luke were written, many think Luke depended on either Matthew or Mark or both when writing his Gospel cf.
The obvious answer is that he was already planning what he was going to write in Acts. Thus at the beginning of the latter, he records Jesus telling the disciples:. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth Acts The presence of these elements at the end of Luke, and particularly the way he diverges from Mark, indicates that he was already planning what he would write in Acts.
I therefore estimate that Luke was finished immediately before Acts, likely in A. We thus find there are good reasons for thinking that Luke and Acts were both composed in Rome, around A. Jimmy was born in Texas, grew up nominally Protestant, but at age 20 experienced a profound conversion to Christ. Planning on becoming a Protestant seminary professor, he started an intensive study of the Bible. But the more he immersed himself in Scripture the more he found to support the Catholic faith, and in he entered the Catholic Church.
As a new follower I am appreciative of your attention to being precise and thorough in each topic. My reading of Christian history up to the present points to so much corruption, ladder climbing by those who hunger for power, and misuse of power over victims. Even when I look at my own life I see too much unholiness.
Have you written specifically on this topic? I need some down to earth teaching on this. Skip to content. When were the four Gospels written? The real question is how early in the first century they were written. Festus then replies: You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar you shall go Acts Luke simply says: And he lived there two whole years at his own expense, and welcomed all who came to him, preaching the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ quite openly and unhindered Acts We get no resolution on what happened when Paul appeared before Nero.
